Similar to the most recent episode of The Walking Dead that was released by Telltale, The Wolf Among Us: Episode 3 – A Crooked Mile also seems to introduce a level of fear to the story and characters. Unlike The Walking Dead, we are not introduced to a new villain, but there is fear of one that appears to pulling the strings everywhere. Without any details, Episode 3 almost feels like The Empire Strikes Back of The Wolf Among Us, not just because of quality, but the feel of almost defeat by the time it is over. The shocking final chapter of the episode will make the wait for the fourth episode, likely in two months, all that much longer.
One of our biggest problems with the second episode of The Wolf Among Us was the length, clocking in at only about an hour. Luckily, Episode 3 is more on par with the first episode by lasting more in the hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes range. The pacing was also much better this episode, with the chapters being laid out well to where you didn’t feel like it was over as soon as you started, like the last one.
The other major problem with The Wolf Among Us: Episode 2 was the number of technical problems found throughout. There are of course the technical hiccups that plague every Telltale game, but Episode 2 was even worse with terrible stuttering and freezes found throughout. After the latest episode of The Walking Dead seemed to run about the best of any other Telltale games on a console, I had high hopes and they delivered this time. I did not come across any freezes or hardly any stuttering. There was still some stiff movement that we are used to from Telltale, but it easily was the best running of the three episodes thus far on the Xbox 360.
Really about the only complaint I had about this episode was that the amount of actual investigation was less, as you did not have a lot to choose from in each location. Also, there are some items you may miss out on due to the story automatically moving forward by you choosing another item first. The pseudo time limit could have been a little more involved as well, but that is just nitpicking.
The latest episode of The Wolf Among Us is certainly one that you should not miss, especially if you are heavily invested in the story. Everything is moved forward even further, with a lot of game changers occurring at every turn. We see the return of some of our favorite characters, as well as the introduction of a few new ones that have a lot of potential, especially one late in the episode. The ending is worth playing the episode for alone, as we once again get a cliffhanger that will leave us dying to play the next entry. If you were turned off by Episode 2, certainly give The Wolf Among Us another try with this fantastic episode.
