Rust has been a huge success since its launch on Steam Early Access and that success may now extend over to consoles. Garry Newman of Facepunch Studios went on record today stating that team is currently planning to port Rust to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It isn’t set in stone yet, as countless factors could impact the likelihood of it becoming a reality, but that is their goal at the moment.
Here are the words directly from Newman himself in today’s console development update:
So with Rust, we are planning to port it to consoles. We haven’t started that process yet. We’re not planning anything until we’ve tried to get it running on one of the consoles and know what problems we’re going to face. It’s important to emphasise here that we’re porting TO consoles. We’re not making a dumbed down console version and then porting it back to the PC. So might happen, might not. Depends on a bunch of stuff. Either way neither the PS4 or XBone have any kind of early access program as far as I know, so it will be a while away.
Vice President Publisher & Developer Relations of SCEA Adam Boyes was quick to remark that PlayStation allows paid betas, even pointing out that “Dust 514 was in paid beta for 1+ years”. With that piece of information on the table, it seems a little more likely that Rust will find its way to the PS4 before landing on the Xbox One. Only time will tell if the two companies work out an agreement.
