Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Earlier this year when we saw the unveiling of the return of Star Wars Battlefront, one of my first thoughts was how much I’d like to see a return to the Star Wars Rogue Squadron series. Debuting on the Nintendo 64, the series carried over to the Gamecube with two releases, but the series has been gone ever since. While the levels based on the movies were great, and I’d love to see HD remakes of those, the original levels were a blast as well, so the series has plenty of potential left. Who doesn’t want to play the Death Star trench run or the Battle of Hoth again with the capabilities that consoles have today?
Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball
Yes, this game is of course most well known for its pervy nature, which the fighting games in the series are well known enough on their own for over the years. However, there was a little more to this one than meets the eye. The volleyball itself may not have had the deepest mechanics, but it was a lot of fun while also featuring a sport that hasn’t really been seen in gaming otherwise. The different mini-games were pretty unique, especially in the sequel, and the collecting mechanic kept bringing me back. I can still remember the days of my friends and I having a blast playing the mini-games in both games. Another game was made for the PSP, but it focused mostly on the gambling aspect, which was also a quite fun element in the series. With the main series still alive, I wouldn’t mind another entry from this spinoff in the future.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem might be most well known due to the fact that it was the first Mature rated game that Nintendo published themselves when it was released for the Gamecube. The game featured an extremely well crafted story with plenty of character development as well. It is also known as one of the scariest games of all time by many, and from my time playing it years ago, I can easily understand why due to the beyond creepy atmosphere and enemies. A sequel was originally planned, but cancelled along the way, while Nintendo has reupped the trademark multiple times, giving hope for a followup eventually.
Mega Man (Classic, X, and Legends)
I figured I would save this one for near the end due to the fact that we did get a new entry in this series back in 2010 with Mega Man 10. However, pretty much all three variations of the franchise appear to be clinging to life at this point, as no new games are in development that we know of at this time. Mega Man Legends 3 had been being developed for the Nintendo 3DS, but Capcom cancelled it, and seemingly the Mega Man series based on their treatment of it over recent years. The Mega Man X series hasn’t been revisited at all since 2004 and Mega Man Legends since 2000. My dream would be some sort of crossover game, similar to something like Sonic Generations, but we all know that likely won’t be happening. We can hope that Capcom decides that the Blue Bomber is worth bringing out of retirement with his upcoming stint in the new Super Smash Bros.
College Sports Games
This one is likely a pipe dream right now so I left it for last, but I would do about anything to see the return of college sports related video games. For most of my life, video games and sports have been my two greatest passions and when it was announced that EA Sports was ending its NCAA Football series after last year’s game, being disappointed was an understatement. A few years ago we lost both of the college basketball related games and the college baseball game only lasted two years. EA Sports has of course stopped their series due to all of the ongoing litigation to do with the licensing of players, which is why I said it is likely only a pipe dream right now. At this point, it will likely take a decision by the NCAA of paying players some capacity for their rights for it to happen, sadly enough. Regardless, I would like to see a return of these games in the future.
