We recently got a chance to sit down with Senior Creative Director of DC Universe Online, Jens Andersen and ask a few questions about the recent Playstation 4 release and plans for the future.
JPS– DC Universe Online is a title that has been in development for a very long time and continues to evolve as time goes on. That is apparent with the release on PlayStation 4. What makes the PS4 release so special to you guys that it differs from the launch on PlayStation 3?
Jens Andersen-Prior to the launch of PlayStation 4, 70% of our players were on the PS3 and we know many of them will transfer over to the new console. The ability to continue to grow the game on both the previous and next gen consoles is one of the most important reasons this launch was so special to us. We’re very excited that the PS3 and PS4 communities can share the same servers. This is a really cool development for our players and signals a bright and long future for DCUO on the console.
JPS- PlayStation 4 brings with it a way to purchase marketplace items with real-life cash simple titled ‘Marketplace Cash’. Is there any worry that this might alienate those who have been familiar with the old ways? How has the response to the new system been so far?
Jens- Marketplace Cash is a great way to purchase premium items from the marketplace. We’ve had similar currencies to do that with already, so I don’t think players will find it alienating at all. So far, so good!
JPS- The option to not require PlayStation Plus to play online when other titles do, was that an internal decision at SOE or one from PlayStation?
Jens- A little of both, but it was ultimately SCE’s decision on how they wanted to handle it. We’re happy that DCUO remains truly a free-to-play game, allowing our players the ability to experience DCUO in a way that best suits them.
JPS- Any word on when we might see the new User Interface release or how the progress has come with that?
Jens- The new UI is coming along great, but we are still making some refinements to ensure that our players get the best experience possible from the usability and performance changes. We are also working on integrating some of the feedback we received from players that got an early peek at the UI.
JPS- Is there mouse & keyboard support for DCUO on PlayStation 4?
Jens- You can use a keyboard on the PS4. I have one hooked up myself at home to make chatting with other players easier.
JPS- Who is your favorite character in DCUO?
Jens- T.O. Morrow, of course! But I might be a little bias as I voice the character personally. Hehe.
JPS- Thank you for the opportunity to sit down and talk with us. Looking forward to experiencing DC Universe Online on PlayStation 4.
