In the midst of trailers for all sorts of upcoming games in today’s Nintendo Direct, perhaps the most surprising, outside of Hyrule Warriors, was a different little title called NES Remix. This game takes some of the “best gameplay set pieces from this era,” and makes them into interesting little games with twists on the original.
Coming from 16 total original NES titles, NES Remix takes these levels from the original game and sometimes adds elements to make them more interesting. One portion shows the use of Link in the original Donkey Kong instead of Jumpman. Another shows level 1-1 from the original Super Mario Bros. with only silhouettes shown on a grey background. Others like NES Baseball remain about the same, but highlight the elements that made them classic in the first place.
NES Remix is compatible with Miiverse and the stamp feature, so expect some fun online communities involved with this game. The use of Miiverse allows you to post your best records to compete with others online.
NES Remix is available for download right now on the Wii U eShop for $14.99. The debut trailer for the game is available below. For some reason this trailer says only a dozen NES games are included but the Direct itself showed the list of 16 games that the game includes.
