Batman: Arkham Asylum
While Arkham City and Origins may have improved on some aspects of Arkham Asylum, the first title had the best atmosphere that would fit playing on this holiday. This is especially the case in the Scarecrow segments after being infected by Crane’s fear toxin. What is better fitting for this holiday than playing as the Dark Knight?
Bioshock
Similar to Arkham Asylum, Bioshock might not be traditionally scary, but the atmosphere to this game is hard to describe as anything other than spooky, with dark hallways while you are pretty much alone the entire game. The scariest moments are when you come face to face with Big Daddies throughout the game. This is a good one to turn the lights off and play alone for the best experience.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest (Gloomy Gulch)
When thinking of Halloween theme levels, this is actually the one that came to my mind ahead of any others. It’s an entire world of horror based levels with the standout gameplay wise being Haunted Hall. This is a minecart level with a ghost following you throughout. If you mess up during, he will catch up and kill you. The music in this level is great, but the most creepy sounds come from the other levels in the world that include wooing Ghosts while outside in the forest.
Banjo Kazooie – Mad Monster Mansion
Banjo Kazooie has long been one of my favorite games and Mad Monster Mansion is one level that always stands out due to the theme. The stage features very memorable music and multiple locations to visit. Who can forget turning into a pumpkin and flushing yourself down Loggo the toilet to get a Jiggy?
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
I just had to put this one on the list as a joke. This may be one of the worst games ever created, possibly the worst. If you haven’t seen the Angry Video Game Nerd reviews of this game, you must check it out. The game has some of the worst controls and physics that there have ever been. I picked it up on NES a few years ago just to say I owned it and it actually can be fun with friends just due to how bad it is. That is the only reason you should ever play it.

October 31, 2013 at 1:43 PMWhat a weak list. Where are the good new games? Outlast, Amnesia, not so scary/actiony Dead Space, Condemned, Fear…even the old System Shock 2. Dean James son I’m disappoint.

October 31, 2013 at 4:17 PMThat’s why I said to post your favorites in the comments. The horror genre is not one of my top played genres, so I miss out on a lot. Now I’ll have to try out those games sometime.
