Super Mario 64 – Big Boo’s Haunt
This level seems like the perfect setting for a game to play on Halloween. Spooky castle, ghosts, creepy music, and more fill this stage. However, the main reason this level is on the list? That piano that tries to attack you when you least expect it your first playthrough. Who would ever expect a piano with giant teeth to attack you like this, even in the strange Mario universe.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
This game is one of the creepiest, emotional, messed up games you will ever play, and it’s a Legend of Zelda title. In what I feel is an extremely underrated game, Majora’s Mask creates an atmosphere of outright despair and some of the events in the game are just downright disturbing and sad. While the entire game could be played in one night and fits the list, the best area for this is to head to Ikana Canyon and do the Ancient Castle of Ikana and the Stone Tower Temple. The Elegy of Emptiness still creeps me out to this day, especially the inverted version.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
While the Castlevania series is horror-themed, the games aren’t exactly the scariest overall. As a result, I thought I’d pick what most see as the best in the series, Symphony of the Night. The game features Alucard as he searches out for Dracula in a fantastic sidescroller with a lot of depth through RPG like elements. Even if you’ve never played any games in the series, this is an excellent first entry to try.
Left 4 Dead 2
The first game is great, but the second improved on just about everything while releasing only a year later. This is one of the best options for you if you are hanging out with a group of friends tonight as Left 4 Dead lends itself to a multiplayer experience. Even the game’s campaign needs four players, either with your friends or the computer controlling the other three. The way you play the game changes each time, so it is an easy one to pick back up and play.
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
With the base game being one of the best games of the current generation of games, it was great to get a further expansion to Red Dead Redemption with Undead Nightmare. I still remember telling a friend while playing the original game that the atmosphere would be perfect as a horror game as I always expected a zombie to jump out when in the wilderness, and low and behold they created this expansion to allow for just that. Whether this is your first time playing or just jumping back in, it should be a great game to play on Halloween.
Call of Duty: Black Ops (Zombies)
While there was another great zombie mode in last year’s Black Ops II, the most standout is still the first zombies where you get to control former world leaders such as John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro. Really though, either one is a great option for you to play. Like with Left 4 Dead, this one is best played if you are having a group of friends over as it greatly enhances the experience.

October 31, 2013 at 1:43 PMWhat a weak list. Where are the good new games? Outlast, Amnesia, not so scary/actiony Dead Space, Condemned, Fear…even the old System Shock 2. Dean James son I’m disappoint.

October 31, 2013 at 4:17 PMThat’s why I said to post your favorites in the comments. The horror genre is not one of my top played genres, so I miss out on a lot. Now I’ll have to try out those games sometime.
