With the disappointment so far for the Wii U, many have said that Nintendo should start sharing their first party properties on other platforms, especially mobile platforms like the iPhone or Android phones. However, in an interview with ComputerAndVideoGames, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata dismissed this idea saying his job is to secure long-term prosperity for Nintendo, not just find a short-term fix by giving away Nintendo’s “precious properties.” Iwata went on to say:
What I believe is that Nintendo is a very unique company, because it does its business by designing and introducing people to hardware and software – by integrating them, we can be unique. And because we have hardware and software developers in the same building, they stimulate each other. And those kinds of conditions have enabled us to create something that no other companies can create. Those kinds of backgrounds are there behind the fact that such a number of great Nintendo franchises exist, and those great franchises always shine for people around the world.
The main concerns for Nintendo involve that fact that there have only been 160,000 Wii U’s sold worldwide as of July, with a lack of system sellers titles not helping. The big test will come in the upcoming months with the multiple first party releases coming to the console. Many felt that a price cut would be announced by now for the console, like with the Nintendo 3DS, but it appears Nintendo may take their chances with the hopes that the new software coming out this holiday season will boost the console sales.
