Cory Barlog is best known for his work on the God of War series, having been the lead animator for God of War and the game director for the highly acclaimed God of War II. He was the game director of God of War III for the first eight months of production before leaving for unknown reasons in November 2007. Soon after he announced a game based on Mad Max, but nothing specific has come out on his attachment to that project in a long time. He then went on to direct the cinematics for the Tomb Raider reboot. Today he has announced via the Playstation Blog that he has now returned to Sony Santa Monica Studios after a 6 year leave.
With the love fans have for the first three God of War games especially, this is very welcome news. The most intriguing part of the news is Barlog mentioning getting a team together for an unnamed project.
What am I working on, you ask? Good question. Sadly, I cannot tell you…yet. But I can say that it is freaking huge, and it will live up to the standards that I helped establish here at SMS. We’re putting together a team as I type this, an Ocean’s 11 kind of thing. We are searching the world high and low for the best of the BEST to come and be on the ground floor of this endeavor.
What could this project be with Sony Santa Monica Studios? If his track record proves anything, it will likely be worth checking out when it all comes together.
