Last year a new model of the Playstation 3 was launched exclusively in Europe and Hong Kong that completely removed the hard drive, and instead replaced it with 12 GB of flash memory. Now almost a year later, a similar model will be making it to North America.
It has been reported that the new model has already been spotted in a Kmart stockroom in the United States with a release date set for August 18. This did not give a price, but Future Shop in Canada had the system listed on their site earlier today for $199.99, but has since been deleted. The existing 250 GB model sells for $269.99, so this price may very well end up being correct.
It has not been said whether or not a hard drive can be added to this system like all of the other Playstation 3 models. With the large installations required for some Playstation 3 games, 12 GB of flash memory would not last very long. Keep an eye out for an official announcement soon that is expected from Sony very soon.
