Sony has always kept online play free unlike Microsoft. That all changed when it was announced at E3 you need a PlayStation Plus subscription on the PS4 for online play.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, Sony President Shuhei Yoshida says it was not possible to keep it free with the amount of investment the company they’re putting to resources.
Here’s an excerpt of what he said:
“The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We’re developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources. Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that’s the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service.”
He added in the fact that you don’t need more than one PlayStation Plus account on one console to access the benefits of PS Plus. If you have more than one account on the PS4, only one of them needs to have a PS Plus subscription.
Even if you choose not to have a PlayStation Plus subscription on PS4, you’ll still have access to other apps and services that the PSN provides. Unlike with free Xbox LIVE Silver accounts where you need to pay to use apps like Netflix etc.
It has been revealed however that some free to play PS4 games don’t require you to have a PS Plus subscription to play online…

June 28, 2013 at 12:23 PMThe fact that you only need one subscription per account is good news. (Take that xbox!)
But I wonder what they will do for users who have multiple systems or sign in at a friend’s house?

I would think they would allow you to login on a different system like you can do on the PS3, and load your data onto it (which it will then load your PS+ data.)

July 13, 2013 at 3:04 AMHe doesn’t say keeping online play free is absurd, he says lowering the standard of online features to keep it free is absurd. I understand you’re trying to catch some attention with the title, but try not to slander, that’s kind of illegal.
