Most of the features Sony announced during its E3 presentation was met with thunderous applause. The one things that irked some gamers is that a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is now needed to play online.
In an interview with Game Watch, they asked Sony President Shuhei Yoshida more on this requirement:
“We’re focusing on new services and online, like the “Share” button I previously mentioned and the ability to play using mobile devices with the cloud feature. Our plan is to continue to invest in the future, but investing like this is not compatible with our previous policy that involved reducing costs by every mean to keep the service free.”
He apologized to gamers about this requirement, but reiterated the fact that PlayStation Plus has its many benefits. This includes free monthly games and discounts just to name a few. Multiplayer will remain free for PS3 and PS Vita owners so this is only for future PS4 owners.
Yoshida some online games such as PlanetSide 2 and DC Universe Online won’t require a PlayStation Plus subscription because this they are fully free to play. This will depend on publishers if they want you to play a monthly fee or not.
