Borderlands 2 has seen a new and flawed Vault Hunter join the adventure for the ultimate score. Krieg the Psycho is a high risk, high reward character that favors melee fighters (or those that like igniting themselves). Besides costing $9.99, there’s a lot wrong with Krieg, and sadly this isn’t a surprise given Gearbox’s recent track record. Continue reading to find out what problems players are facing while roaming Pandora as Krieg.
Early on in the game, you’ll find yourself in the Three Horns-Valley area. Now, if you enjoy completing challenges and earning Badass Points, you’ll be disappointed to learn that Krieg cannot complete the “This Ain’t My First Rodeo” challenge. Why is this? Well, after attempting it countless times, I joked that it must be a weight issue. Little did I know how right I was. Paul Hellquist, Creative Director and Lead Designer for Krieg, had the following to say when the issue began to appear in the community forums:
This is because we made Krieg’s mass heavier than the other characters. The change was so that many of the enemies (notably the loaders) could not create situations where you could not be effective with Krieg’s action skill because they would knock you back so far that you could not get a hit in on them when you closed to melee range.
The unfortunate side effect is that the impulse on the geyser is not enough to get you up as far when you are playing Krieg. It was a trade well worth making since the entire character was frustrating and unfun before this change.
As you can imagine, many readers were not satisfied with this answer, mainly because the mass increase doesn’t only impact this single challenge. There have been reports that given Krieg’s heavier nature, the “Ever Blow Bubbles…?” challenge tucked within Caustic Caverns is impossible. Furthermore, Krieg’s weight has voided the effect of grenade jumping, a trick usable by the rest of the Vault Hunters. While the latter isn’t all that troublesome, the prevention of certain challenges has irked completionists. Do the character design issues stop there? I wish.

May 17, 2013 at 9:16 PMI like Krieg for all his flaws. He allows me to play how I normally play RPGs, as a run-in-and-fuck-people-up class.

May 17, 2013 at 9:43 PMI’ve hit level 61 w/ Maya, Zero & Axton and I have to say thus far I’m having the most fun w/ Krieg. I could careless about not being able to complete a challenge here or there.
To all the people whining about having to pay for a character or complaining b/c it’s not part of the season pass. Or the constant internet rumblings from butt-hurt gamers crying about other games w/ micro-transactions…… There’s an easy solution:
Don’t buy it.
Micro-transactions in games are not mandatory to play/complete the game. DLC for any game that cost money is not mandatory to play/complete the game. I’d rather have the option to get more game play for a little more $$, then have the developer not come out with or release any additional content.
Quit your bitchin.

May 17, 2013 at 11:19 PMAnyone crying about it not being included in the season pass is just an entitled moron…It was advertised for months in advance that Borderlands 2 would be getting some new characters via DLC….And obviously these morons weren’t paying attention….Considering that again for MONTHS in advance they advertised the DLC included in the season pass would be 4 CAMPAIGN expansions for the price of 3…Never in there did it elude to characters or skins or level increases 4 DLC campaign expansions for the price of 3 clear as crystal in EVERY single piece of advertisement released MONTHS before the game actually released….Just because your an entitled whiner doesn’t men you get to cry and throw a temper tantrum to get your way knowing exactly what you were getting for the money you spent on the season pass…..Jesus it’s like these morons think if they just cry enough maybe they’ll get there way and get the character

May 18, 2013 at 2:15 AMSo, what you’re saying is, if you’re OCD, have magnets on you in order to cause items to fly towards you, enjoy being tossed off cliffs, and don’t understand why not using the weapon that applies the melee bonus doesn’t grant you that melee bonus despite the fact that you can have upwards of 500% damage (including all buffs granted by the Mania tree), you’ll be disappointed by this class.
Few inaccuracies with this piece, by the way. Almost as anecdotal as yours, except that unlike you it appears I’ve actually played this class for longer than it takes to get to the first area.
First, Roids. I’ve received the bonus while in Buzz-Axe Rampage. I’ve been using Roid shields since I found my first one on top of the Bloodshot Dam. I’m currently using the Love Thumper. When I read this, I went to test it, both with a Roid shield on, and a Roid shield off. With the Roid shield on, I did significantly higher damage.
Second, no, Zero isn’t a better melee fighter. I haven’t even maxed my Krieg’s Mania tree out yet, and he’s still doing significantly more damage per shot and going down significantly less than my melee zero does. This is despite the fact that my melee Zero is a much higher level, and despite the fact that he doesn’t work best when his shield is down–meaning that I have a high-capacity, low recharge delay shield equipped to him. Krieg’s Buzz-Axe Rampage is capable of killing Badasses in moments; I won’t lie, when I saw this I was expecting it to be an article about how overpowered he was.
Yes, Light the Fuse is terrible. There is nearly no justification for taking it. But that’s easily patchable.
And for Gods’ sake, man, the whole season pass thing was something that we knew several months ago when the Season Pass was released. If anything you should be pointing out that the people who are complaining about that should have read the description on the item before purchasing it.
A few other people have already said this, but I’m having more fun with Krieg than any other character, including Zero, including Gaige. And until this article, I’ve met exactly 0 fans who actually dislike Krieg. Every friend I have who has bought him seems pleased with their purchase.
I’ve noticed that you didn’t link a single example of these videos or articles or even a comment stack which showed displeasure at Krieg. That makes you slightly less credible than some kid talking smack at a high-school; at least the kid has an excuse for not including links in his talk. You had one link, and all that did was explain why the Rapier didn’t do as much damage as Buzz-Axe Rampage. And even then, you completely missed the point by quoting something most people could have figured out by reading the description.
This article MIGHT have a legitimate point. I don’t know. But if it does, whoever wrote it needs to do some serious editing before it can be taken seriously.

May 18, 2013 at 8:03 AMthe only real issue i’ve come across so far is one of his late talents make you attack yourself…now, you have to take this talent if you want to utilize his action skill the most because of the massive +melee%, but then you attack yourself, it stuns you for like 2 seconds and…the difficulty of this character almost makes it seem like a troll by Gearbox lol.

May 18, 2013 at 4:47 PMI agree awesome who gives a fuck a bout challenges it the fun and power

May 18, 2013 at 4:51 PMSure zero with killing blow at 5 points and a class mod that boost it then yes he is powerful a finishing Enimies which can be helpful but kreig is stronger

May 18, 2013 at 9:41 PMKrieg is so far been my favorite character. Who are you to judge gearbox for making a fun character. Oh wow two challenges, so what. Get a life and quit complaining

May 18, 2013 at 10:51 PMI like Krieg alot! Even so they need to fix his ability to complete certain challenges. If you are like me and your a completionist that’s a big part of the game for me even if it is only a few badass points. You can complete slab uhf with him I’ve done it. Hopefully they fix all this soon and I’m not judging them yet. If they leave it as is then I’ll be disappointed.

May 19, 2013 at 1:07 AMWow…. You are sad you know that. Have you even played with him past level 5? He is a bad ass! By far the most fun I have had with the game and well worth the $10. Sure he’s not perfect, but he’s so much fun to play as I (and obviously my fellow gamers) love him. You fined one thing off like not able to complete a challenge and have to start picking at little things and try to make it seam like its the end of the world. He is FUN. Grow up, stop bitching, and play the game for the fun. Also take this article down, your just sad.

May 19, 2013 at 3:12 AMIt comes down to this, I’ve had far more fun playing krieg so far than any other character.
Is there a few flaws, sure, the melee calculation is a little odd and sometimes killing yourself with silence the voices is frustrating… but aren’t games about fun, and I’ve had more fun with krieg. Was it worth it, for me hell yeah.

May 19, 2013 at 7:23 PMI found the aint my first time at the rodeo challenge hilarious, i was screaming at my monitor calling krieg fatty for like an hour. (even after i had given up on the challenge)
Krieg is hands down my favourite character thus far. i personally fin d the extra classes so much more fun then the base classes which for someone who poured over 250 hours in the first game is great because the base classes just feel like extensions of the original 4.

I think this video by itself should take out any doubts that Krieg is a horrible character to play as. Yes the melee calculations and the weight are flaws, but those do not break Krieg. He is not a letdown. His damage potential surpasses all Vault Hunters save Salvador, and only if Sal has the right gear. You can give Krieg a simple normal Tediore Rocket Launcher and he can do this:

I would say Krieg is a better melee character, simply because he can constantly do extreme melee damage, where as Zero can do more but only once or so while depending on his cloak.

May 21, 2013 at 7:16 PMMy friend was able to complete the slab UHF challenge with Krieg. He did have hard time doing it and mentioned having to adjust hi jumps differently.

May 22, 2013 at 11:59 AMhonestly, its no contest. A) sneak around and hope i dont get hit by a bullet using zer0, or, use kriegs imperfect, yet badass domination.

June 13, 2013 at 4:38 AMwhen playing krieg you want him to be easy to hit so his size is important. most of kriegs best abilities and combos only come into play when his shields are down and health is low.
i havent had any problems at all with loot or achievements and in all honestly, and this coming from a man who always plays the sniper, i have had more fun playing krieg then any of the other character. it is a game of cat and mouse played with death. if you put off his trigger skill till you are almost deadyou can perform and endless cycle of his trigger skill withought having to wait for the cool down making him as effective with melee as brick if not better.
if you play him i do reccomend the mania tree as a building block and then moving into another tree after you hit the pinacle skill. mania/hellborn seems to be the best for leveling and over all survivability

June 25, 2013 at 2:14 AMwhat an idiot! are you seriously trying to tell me, that you don’t like playing as krieg because the loot has a higher chance to deflect of you because hes a few centimeters taller! lol i suppose you spent too much time playing as salvador to really appreciate him being tall! you sound like a total Loser! Kreig is a complete boss! if never been so excited for a dlc in my life! i would gladly pay 50 dollars for him! i wish people would stop complaining about him not being included in the season pass, neither was the mechromancer! maybe the melee calculation is a little off but it dosent really show as everyone dead before i can read the damage im dealing! :)

June 27, 2013 at 7:45 AMto me this guy is like a new brick form bl1 but with an axe those complaining are just attension seekers… fucking assholes

July 11, 2013 at 12:03 AMThe only problem I’ve run into is the 2 challenges. I got Slab UHF no problem when I could never get it with Axton. The weird thing is that on my first trip through Caustic Caverns, I hit a bubble and when flying as high as anyone else, but coming back to get the challenges I don’t go higher than a few feet.

July 11, 2013 at 10:51 PM80153015 problem on xbox showing up everytime im buying kraig. for some reason xbox wont let me buy him i dont know why? i did what they told me to do. is anyone having the same problem?

July 14, 2013 at 1:24 PMThis is all lies.
The mass thing might not be. If you really care about grenade jumping, (Who gives a crap?) a couple of very minor challenges, (Again, who gives a crap?) and taking more damage on a class that GETS MORE POWERFUL AS IT TAKES DAMAGE!!! then why the hell would you buy it?
Choco
July 23, 2013 at 10:19 AMMy stance on this is: Who ever wrote that article is a moron. Who the hell cares about 2 little challenges or nade jumping. You try to nitpick here and fail miserably (oh god, how dumb the loot deflection part is), because you ignore the one most important thing of all -> Krieg is a BLAST to play. But you probably don’t know, because you don’t even seem to have played him.
Finally there’s only 1 thing to say, a quote from old Jack: If you could just off yourself, that’d be great.

September 7, 2013 at 10:15 AMI would disagree with most of the people posting here, mainly on the level of being enormous assholes about a minor disagreement concerning a video game. I know half of you putzes wouldnt dare talk like that in person, because youd get your greasy faces punched in.
While I agree that Krieg is a flawed character, (looking at you, first four levels of silence the voices) he is also really fun to play. I havent tried the other trees yet, but with mania its hard to not grin like a psychopath when youve just decapitated your eighth in a rampage. Try to get love thumper asap, and keep a good ranged corrosive weapon for goddamned Buzzards, who are a huge pain in Krieg’s neck. When you get to the silence the voices part of the tree i would advise saving five points to max it outright as opposed to doing it piecemeal because its not fun when you bash your own head in.

July 8, 2014 at 7:56 AMall the whiners talking about how krieg has no gun abilities, and how you have to take damage to even be good, thats the POINT krieg has abilities centered around taking damage so you can do devastating attacks and get your health back quick. a tip, have mania as the center to pretty much any build you do. light the fuse and redeem the soul make klieg nearly invincible. the whole idea is to get up close, get your shields sown and wreck some fools with your shotty by using salt the wound, and chop them up with the buzz axe. if yo got klieg hoping to stand back with your rifle, you were wrong.

March 3, 2015 at 8:20 PMI got to lvl 45 with Krieg recently, he’s honestly one of my favorite characters, if only because he’s the only good melee character in the game. I can kill lvl 51 badass enforcers as a lvl 45 without going into FFYL using lvl 35(or lower) gear with melee Krieg. I mean come on, he gets larger non situational melee damage bonuses than Zer0, just by leveling, and even more if you use the mania tree. the regular action skill is great early game, but once you get Rubi, law+order, or the grog nozzle, then the action skill becomes obsolete (until you get release the beast, which doubles your damage while using the action skill, reduces the damage you take a lot, and instantly regenerates all your health when used)
Some of Kriegs skills suck, like Silence the voices (you become your own worst enemy with this skill and make yourself an easy target while you recover from the concussion you just gave yourself, happy suiciding. thankfully it isn’t a requirement to get release the beast), pull the pin (only works if you die, and that point is valuble) and light the fuse (no melee, guns or rocket launchers in FFYL. I NEED melee and rocket launchers in FFYL).
