Not Using the Power Brush To Its Potential
Since Power of Illusion is somewhat connected to the Epic Mickey series, I was hoping that the game will put more emphasize to the Power Brush since it is like the main power of Mickey in the Epic Mickey series. Instead, players will be bored to the things that Mickey can do with it. Aside from tracing logos on the bottom screen and thinning out the colors as well, the only other thing that Mickey can do with the Power Brush is to attack enemies, although it will only use the blue ink and not the other one. While the idea of the Power Brush used as a weapon in the Epic Mickey series that can do a lot of things, it’s disappointing to see that the developer didn’t make good use of it in the Power of Illusion, although taking out bosses with it is great.
Unbalanced Difficulty for Kids
With Power of Illusion aimed towards a younger audience, I noticed that the difficulty is not as consistent. The first few levels are easy but as you go deeper in the game, it will have a mix of it that kids may not appreciate playing. Even as a veteran gamer who has played this game before, I still died lots of times playing this game.
Only Three Worlds/Short Gameplay
One of the things that disappoints me is how short the game is. While there are a decent amount of Disney characters that you will encounter in the game, you will be sad to find out that there are only three worlds that you can play through. These three worlds aren’t long to complete and any veteran gamer can run through the game in one sitting. I wasn’t expecting the game to be this short but I guess for children who will be playing this game, they will appreciate the length.
VERDICT
Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion tries to bring the classic Illusion series this generation and they somehow did that successfully, though it does not live up to the greatness of the previous two Illusion titles. For someone who has missed a Mickey Mouse game wtih pure platforming gameplay, the Power of Illusion still satisfied my craving for the game, though it’s a short game and it’s held back by a few mishaps in its gameplay and the repetitiveness of using the Power Brush.
