For a while Gearbox has been giving away a number of shift codes, which unlocked additional golden keys. This has lead to a number of users assuming that this is all the service would be used for. However, according to Randy Pitchford, they will have other uses in the future.
Unfortunately no additional information was given, but its good to know the service will do other things. Since we’re most likely in for a long wait, what type of things do you want to see from shift? Legendary guns? Seraph items? Costumes? Tell us in the comments below!

The nature of the tests (seeing how quickly a “leaked” code is redeemed, how many redemptions in a set period of time, and checking different places to put the codes) suggest to me that it’s actually some form of DRM they’re having the userbase stress- and play-test. And all they have to give us in return is pretend guns!

That is certainly possible, but I suspect it’s a way to get basically free marketing and grow their user base. Since most of these codes require following on Twitter (and Facebook too I believe), many people follow the various accounts that could drop the code, then retweet the message. Additionally many sites like GFAQs and even this one post that the codes are out there, which leads to people going “wow if I want a code, I should follow Gearbox”. Ultimately they’re trading digital keys for likes / follows on social networks.
