Challenge Stages
In addition to everything listed above, Kirby’s Dream Collection also features a number of completely new stages to explore. This is easily the best part of the collection, as it’s a unique twist for the series. Contrary to the standard game, every mission forces you to play as some version of Kirby and get to the end before time runs out. Based off how many coins you collect / enemies you kill, you will receive a score, but watch out as you lose points for damage you take too. Finally this score is tabulated into a total, which will earn you a bronze – gold medal. Based off your overall performance, you can also earn one of four awards too.
The other cool thing about this mode, is how diverse it is. Some of the included challenges are Wing, Sword, Spark and Whip Kirby, so you can tell they’re pretty diverse. However, my personal favorite is Smash Kirby. If this name doesn’t sound familiar to you, it’s because you get to play as Super Smash Bros. Kirby. Sadly he lacks the complete move set, but his levels are extremely fun to play on.
6 Classics for the Price of 1
If you’ve never tried a Kirby game, then you should definitely check this title out. Kirby’s Dream Collection contains 6 of his most popular adventures, including Kirby Super Star. Unfortunately, none of the weirder games made the cut, but there is still more than to do. Regardless, the traditional suck / blow Kirby games are the most popular; so it’s better slots weren’t wasted on something no one wants.
NOT
Limited Value for Virtual Console Supporters
Similar to the Mario Collection, if you’ve bought these games for the Virtual Console, then you’re not get much buying this collection. While the retrospective is extremely cool, I wouldn’t say it was worth $15 or more to obtain. The same goes for the Challenge Stages, which took me about 2 hours to finish. So unless you’re a die hard fan or want to ensure they work on your Wii U, I wouldn’t suggest picking it up.
VERDICT
Kirby’s Dream Collection is exactly what an anniversary collection should be. The retrospective booklet is fantastic for what it is and the Soundtrack has a number of wonderful songs. While it would have been nice to something missing from the Virtual Console, at least the challenge levels are unique to the collection. Ultimately, if you love Kirby or want a nice little collection, then you can’t go wrong with Kirby’s Dream Collection!
