For those who reside in the UK, today saw the release of BBC iPlayer on Xbox LIVE, and it’s free to all Xbox LIVE users, not just Gold subscribers. It comes with a Kinect-enabled interface similar to that of other streaming services available on the platform such as Netflix and Vuze.
iPlayer has now been rolled out across all three consoles in the UK, the reason for its delay in coming to Xbox LIVE was that seeing as it’s a free to use service online, there were some ‘legal’ issues to overcome in making sure it’s content was available behind a paywall i.e. Gold subscription.
Microsoft had a rather interesting stat to boot alongside iPlayers release which was that over 40% of Xbox LIVE Gold members spend an hour a day or more using the consoles various entertainment services.
