What do Battlefield 3 and Dead Space 3 share in common? If certain rumors are to be believed, then the answer is a game engine. Recent information has made its way out of EA that points to the next installment in the survival horror franchise using the Frostbite 2.0 engine.
First, it must be known that EA Montreal (known for Army of Two) has been renamed Visceral Games Montreal. The studio responsible for Dead Space had expand from its starting point at EA Redwood Shores. With that piece of knowledge, take a look at a recent job listing from EA:
“Dead Space Franchise is currently seeking a Senior Environment Artist opportunity in our Montreal studio.”
The other piece of evidence goes hand-in-hand with the previous piece. After learning of the game’s likely existence at Montreal, this tweet from DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson further points toward Frostbite 2.0 being used for Dead Space 3.
“Flying off to Canada & the US to visit a whole bunch of Frostbite-powered EA studios before GDC. First stop: Montreal.”
With Frostbite 2.0 boasting impressive graphics, lighting, particle effects and destruction, Dead Space 3 could provide horror experience that is just as spine-chilling as it is beautiful. We’ll be watching GDC closely for any more information or, hopefully, an announcement.
