Recently, it was discovered that if change the language setting to Afrikaans, a language of South Africa and Namibia, gamers will discover a nasty little message, (as seen above).
The game has somewhere around 56 different language options allowing millions of users across the globe, the ability to enjoy this mostly text free game. In a statement to Kotaku, Jens “Jeb” Bergensten, apologized for what he confirmed to be the work of a “Prankster.” It seems that this work of vandalism only appeared in a “snapshot build” and thus has not been pushed out to the five million Minecraft subscribers.
Snapshot builds sometimes rely on updates submitted by users and as such this is one of the risks of crowd-sourced development. We’ve reached out to Jens Bergensten to find out when the next snapshot update will be avaialble to resolve this horribly offensive “prank” but have not yet received a response. We will update as soon as new information is available.
