With an eye for nostalgia, Pixeljunk created the interesting game Sidescroller. With this came some mildly difficult trophies and quick thinking elements. While the game isn’t too long; many of the bosses can make it difficult to progress. However this guide will show you how to dispatch them all.
Bronze:
A Close Encounter of the Scrolling Kind
Complete your first sector.
This is done by beating stage 1-1. You should be able to figure it out on your own, but if you’re having problems try the machine gun.
Sector Perfecter
Complete all sectors in one stage.
There are four sectors per stage and the last one always has a boss. The most difficult stage will be 1-3, but you need to remember to take it slow and play smart. Also keep in mind that the laser does the most damage.
S is for SideScroller
Complete all three stages.
Sidescroller features three sectors and the final boss. Just about every stage can be completed by playing smart or having good aim. This shouldn’t be an issue till your hard run. If you’re having issues see “Most Harmful”.
Most Harmful
Complete any sector on Hard difficulty setting.
While this trophy says any sector, you do need to beat them all for another trophy. This means that you need to look at the bigger scope of things. For the most part the game is the same, but I found the laser became the only useful tool. The quicker you get used to it the better. The main challenge will come from bosses over stages though.
Hardest Stages:
- 1-3
- 2-2
- 3-1
- 3-4
- 4
Boss Guide:
1-4: This fight is a joke… if you can survive the second rocket assault. That is the main difference and yes it is huge (bullets are added). This means you have to damage his four spots sometime before his next assault. This is basically only done with the laser. Keep in mind that the bottom left one holds a shield 100% of the time. If you can break them all, then you’re basically set. The next part is a very easily dodged stream of attacks.
2-4: Among the bosses, this is the easiest boss. However that’s only if you use the laser. There is no real trick to fighting him, just make your shots count. This will be over long before it even began.
3-4: You’re looking at the only boss that really requires skill. Each segment is different so pay attention that aspect below.
Phase 1: Machine gun bullets seem to help the most here, but your real objective is to dodge attacks. This is due to the cannons firing at you. This is done by flying under them right before making contact with the ground. It will take some getting used to, but will work. This is the only challenge to this part and the fight.
Phase 2: Bombs will generally fall on him regardless, so just constantly avoid taking damage. Also remember that bullets will shoot when the hatch opens.
Phase 3: Pull out your laser and blow up the wheel. All the patterns here are easy to avoid so there shouldn’t be an issue.
Phase 4: Congrats you basically won. Take out the machine gun and play it REALLY SAFE. The safer you play, the easier this fight is. All of his attacks are a joke if you’re playing smart.
End Boss: Sadly there is no trick here, but the laser works best. The hardest part will be segment two, but this is easily completed if you only attack when it’s safe. Outside of this just pay attention to his patterns. This boss does the exact same thing every time.
Get, kid. Don’t get cocky.
Complete any sector on the Brutal difficulty setting.
This requires hard completed and is a huge step up in difficulty. Ironically the best way to win is to avoid as much combat as possible. This is due to enemies blowing up into bullets. The hardest part will be the last room, though if you use the wall properly nothing can hit you.
Triple Crowner
Get all three hidden Crowns in any sector.
This sounds harder than it is. Play casual and use the machine gun. Move into any tight spot shooting your gun. This should end up with all the spots being exposed come the end.
You Make Me Wish I Had Three Hands
Use each weapon one time.
Various buttons switch your weapons. I prefer R2, but to each their own. Just simply swap your weapon and fire. Rinse and repeat till you finish all three.
Spin-a-delic
Defeat 50 enemies using the Charge Attack.
This will happen on a later run, but you can do it earlier if you wish. Find a large grouping and hold R1. This will make a ring form around your ship. Simply release to do a charged attack. Keep in mind that you’re not immune to bullets. Also remember that this is not a laser attack.
You Are the Pris to my Roy
Complete any sector by playing with a friend in co-op mode.
Plug in another controller and play 1-4 on casual. Simply beat the boss then enjoy your trophy.
Combolicious
String together a Combo of 100 points or more.
This should happen CONSTANTLY without trying. If you’re having issues, the last part of 1-1 should give you 130 if you can do it fast enough.
Pedal to the Medal
Receive the highest ranking medal on any sector.
Select a boss (I did 1-4) on casual difficulty. Change your weapon to the laser and do this as fast as possible. This should net you the highest rank. If you’re having issues try another boss. Keep in mind that the highest rank is a completely different icon than the normal ranks.
Q-Beams Glitter in the Dark
Defeat 10 enemies or more using one Laser Shot.
There are a number of areas where many enemies are lined up. These include 1-1, 2-1, 3-2, and finally 3-3. They all occur at easy parts and shouldn’t give you a hassle.
Ender’s Game
Complete any Sector without getting hit by a single shot.
This should happen while getting the highest rank, but if not play mission 1-4 on casual. This boss will die so quickly that you might have to dodge four attacks. Very easy and quick.
Silver:
Spin Long and Prosper
Complete any sector without firing a single shot. [Hint: use the charge attack!]
This is surprisingly easy. Basically play 1-1 on casual and take out anything that will be a problem. The last part can be moderately tricky, but there are many instances where he won’t even attack.
Gold:
So Long, and Thanks for All the Bullets
Defeat the final boss.
See “Most Harmful”.
