I know some Tetris enthusiasts. They’re the kind of people who, when in a social situation, actively seek out people with iPhones and iPod touches so they can nail a quick round of the traditional block-dropping puzzler. As much as these people love Tetris, I wouldn’t wager they’d go for EA’s latest offer.
EA released a new version of Tetris on the app store recently, while simultaneously removing their last Tetris game. The new 69p game offers a subscription for exclusive content, faster levelling and discounts on DLC. The subscription is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
I’m not necessarily against subscriptions in games, but I find it hard to imagine that this is a viable business model for Tetris.
