Following on from Tiger Woods much publicised meltdown back in 2009, many where led to believe that his days as the pristine sports icon on the front cover of EA’s PGA Tour franchise were seriously numbered. However, EA were one of the few of Tiger Woods’ sponsors that didn’t run for the hills in the outbreak of his crushed image. They stood by their man as putting him on the face of last year’s title, and now he’s back again.
EA confirmed that Woods will remain the franchise’s cover athlete and namesake, but that he’ll be joined by two other athletes, Rickie Fowler and Rory Mcllroy. The decision comes on the back of results from a poll EA conducted among fans. This marks Fowler’s first appearance on the cover, and Mcllroy’s second, following PGA Tour 11.
“Appearing on the cover of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 was an amazing experience and helped introduce me to a whole new fan base around the world,” McIlroy said, “but this year holds special meaning because it was the fans who decided to put me on the cover once again.”
“For someone that grew up playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour and is a huge fan of the franchise, this is a great moment in my career,” Fowler added. “I’m excited to join Tiger on the cover of this year’s game and want to especially thank all of my fans who spread the word and voted for me.”
Tiger Woods also stated that he is more than happy to share the cover with two of the sports youngest and brightest stars; “There have been a number of great young and up-and-coming golfers to join the sport over the last few years and Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy are certainly on that list,” he said. “Their wins are a testament to their passionate fan base and I’m looking forward to having Rickie and Rory join me on the cover of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13.”
