DC Universe Online has been a subscription based MMO since its debut at the beginning of the year, however, it hasn’t been doing to well for a while.
Now Sony Online Entertainment has decided to make DCUO free to play on Playstation 3 and PC. A three tiered model will replace the current system. The model includes the following subscription types: Free, Premium and Legendary.
Free: This will grant access to two characters as well as all areas and raids within the game, but DLC/bonus items must be paid for.
Premium: If a player has spent $5 or more on subscriptions or in-game content in the past, they will receive extra character/inventory slots, higher cash limits and in-game DLC.
Legendary: Sticking with the current $14.99/month plan will give the player over 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots, the ability to form leagues and all DLC will be included within the subscription price.
At this point, SOE hasn’t announced when the F2P change will take place, but I’m sure owners of DCUO will be happy to know they can play the game for free (since they can’t trade/sell it).
