In the wake of Homefront developer Kaos Studios closure in June, publisher THQ have announced that Crytek, the European developer behind Crysis and Far Cry, will be taking over from Kaos for Homefront’s sequel.
Though Homefront sold admirably the game only ever received a lukewarm critical reception, with our own Mark Fajardo awarding the game three out of five stars. Commenting on the announcement today THQ’s Dany Bilson said “Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”
Many found themselves intrigued by Homefront‘s unique setting and the promise of a game that would explore some pretty poignant issues, but many were left disappointed with a game that didn’t seem to wholly match up to the marketing. Will Crytek be able to take the unique setting of Homefront and deliver something a little more favourable to the critics? Personally, I’m hopeful that they will.
The sequel is currently slated to release during THQ’s 2014 fiscal year.
