Ironically, it has been confirmed that Id Software’s upcoming FPS will require gamers to purchase an online pass.
Creative Director for the game, Tim Willits, confirmed in an interview with Eurogamer that Rage will require an online pass to access it multiplayer modes.
Much like online passes from EA, THQ and others, the pass will be free if you purchase the game as a new title. If you purchase Rage second hand, you can expect to pay $10 extra in order to play the game’s online modes.
“If you bought the game new, that would be open for you. You still have to download it, but you don’t have to pay for it,” said Willits. “Those (sewer) hatches are all over. Most people never find them. But as soon as you do, you’re like, oh. And then you start to look for it. That’s our first-time buyer incentive.”
It’s now becoming an industry standard for game developers to include online passes on all the game’s they have been releasing lately. It’s a trend that is likely to continue from now on.
