Notch has today revealed via his blog The Word of Notch why he is not going to be releasing Minecraft on Steam or other digital distribution platforms.
Notch started by saying that in his opinion “Steam is the best digital distribution platform I’ve ever seen” but went onto say “Steam limits a lot of what we’re allowed to do with the game”. He explained that Minecraft thrives on being open and limits wouldn’t aid the games progression.
Notch added that another reason for not releasing on Steam is that “It would effectively split the Minecraft community into two parts”.
Later talking about all digital distribution services Notch commented that “is awesome. Much more awesome than certain other digital distribution platforms that we would NOT want to release Minecraft on.”
So it seems Minecraft will stay well away from the digital distribution service battle that is currently raging on. Let’s hope that the adventure update that has been ‘coming soon’ doesn’t stay away along for too long.
