SOE has decided to cram more players into the DC Universe Online action. On August 8th, the game’s servers will be merged into MegaServers.
This doesn’t mean that PC and PS3 players will finally get the chance to play together. Instead, the several servers for PS3 and PC will combine together on their respective platform to place more heroes and villains in one world. This will allow people to find and interact with more people to accomplish quests, raids, and so on.
Although the idea of MegaServers is definitely exciting, it is not without its issues. For one, some players may have to change their name due to duplicates. It isn’t entirely known at the moment how SOE will go about deciding which player will get to keep their name and which one will have to change theirs. However, SOE claims the process will be fair. The player chosen to change their name will be given a random name assigned to them, but they will also receive a Name Change Token via in-game email to select another name for free if they aren’t liking their assigned one.
The same goes for duplicate League names. An in-game email will be sent explaining the steps on how to change the currently selected League Name. Just like the duplicate hero/villain name solution, a free Name Change Token will be given to the group leader.
Since this is a massive move for DCUO, downtime is an inevitability. The switch will happen in stages and will render the game unavailable for 10-14 hours.
