For those of you who have been living under a rock the entirety of your lives, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the follow-up to the 2006 Game of the Year winner The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. With it’s addicting gameplay and open world sandbox, the game received multiple Game of the Year, PC Game of the Year and RPG Game of the Year awards. Many gamers still play the game today and have played countless hours in its fictional world. With the release of Skyrim coming near the end of the year and the game having a play style similar to its predecessor, I have come up with reasons as to why I believe it will take the Game of the Year title as Oblivion did years ago.
My first reason as to why I believe the game could be the best of the year is that the gameplay seems highly improved over the previous title. With the core mechanics being kept for the combat and travel, the game is already off to a good start. What makes it an even better is the improvements being made to the entire game that will further enhance the play experience. The first big improvement to combat is the ability to dual-wield a wide variety of combinations. You can have two weapons, a weapon and a spell and a weapon and a shield. This adds for more personalization of the player character creating a more in depth experience. The second improvement comes in the form of a more streamlined leveling system that adds perks to further give the player more power over choosing how and in what they want their character to specialize in. I personally think this is a great deal better than having to choose what I want to specialize in during the intro. The third improvement that comes as a relief is the vastly improved inventory system that allows for better management and more detail.
My second reason is the new Creation Engine created for the game. It brings so much life into the game world that I find myself staring at the beautiful scenery in the trailers rather than pay attention to the actual gameplay. The creatures and people of the world all have their own agendas to attend to such as hunting, working and even their own behavior patterns. Dragons will interact with and kill other things attacking them while they fight with you. Trolls will remain friendly so long as you don’t attack them and the same goes for some of the wildlife. You can take up jobs or just decide to completely ruin a city’s economy. It will definitely add to the immersion into the game world and fans will find plenty of reasons to throw countless hours into what is sure to be an amazing game.
You must also keep in mind that although there is content being changed from Oblivion, there are still enough improvements that were put into the game to help it earn the title. Remember that the change from Morrowind to Oblivion was huge as well and it still earned a place on the mantle for fans. Morrowind will always be the best of the 3, but every era calls for change due to the ever growing industry and fanbase that each new year brings for gaming. This is not an article stating that Skyrim will be the best game of all time, but rather a game that I believe will stand out above the others released this year.

July 23, 2011 at 9:05 AMOkay, I am now changing the word Skyrim to Uncharted 3 in this. Oh look, it fits, but I have two additional reasons why Uncharted 3 is the GOTY this year – 1, the story and character is far, far better than Skyrim, and two, it has co-op and multiplayer where Skyrim has none. Even if by some miracle Skyrims single player is better than Uncharted 3’s, the co-op and multiplayer still beat it.
And Uncharted 2 took way more GOTY titles than Oblivion. And still has a higher score.

I have been a large fan of Uncharted since it first hit the screen, the games are not very different. Look at the gigantic leap between Oblivion and Skyrim. Uncharted 3 is already looking like the same old treasure hunting guns, puzzle, guns, puzzle.
In all honesty, Skyrim should not have multiplayer – there is no way that elder scrolls games could benefit from a multiplayer system, and that is what makes the game so epic and unique – multiplayer Skyrim just doesn’t make sense. The story and characters of Uncharted cannot be compared to Skyrim yet, as we know little about the actual character of Skyrim – above that, the character is completely yours to make (unlike uncharted). The story comes down to personal choice and interest. Your statement concerning the story and characters was a bit foolish
We know little about Skyrim, but i can assure readers that the main comparison of the two massive games will be the personal choice between the two scenarios of the games. Above that, I believe Skyrim will be a more impressive and epic marvel.

July 23, 2011 at 11:42 AMDude morrowinds combat was godawful. I don’t know what rock you crawled out of but oblivion was at least superior to it in that aspect. (Nothing else really) And Skyrim is going to own both of these games. With a combination of envirements and some of the best visuals and of dragons it will easily be the best in the series fool.

No, so far Skyrim has won a lot more E3 awards then UC 3, it even won 2 games critics awards, while UC 3 didn’t win ANY. So far, Skyrim is definitely winning. The 2 competitors for this years GOTY are Skyrim, and BF 3. NOT Uncharted 3. On a side note, DON’T talk about multiplayer, Skyrim is not designed to have multiplayer, the campaign will own Uncharted’s and UC’s crappy multiplayer IS NOT GOING TO MAKE IT ANY BETTER!!!

July 23, 2011 at 4:46 PM@Spencer Your a tard fan boy for Uncharted. You don’t understand anything about what makes a game good. You don’t have to HAVE MULTIPLAYER to be “good”. Skyrim is made to be a awesome SINGLE player game. The game is going to put you into a world that you have choices over not just a stupid linear game like Uncharted where everything is scripted. If I wanted that I would watch a movie man. Learn what makes a game “good” before you start bashing another.
