The actual hardware specifications of the Wii U have yet to be unveiled but technology website Engadget has some of the first details of what the machine is capable of.
The Wii U is reported to have a custom Radeon GPU with a chip that is similar to the ones used currently on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Although the GPU is said to be stronger than the Xbox 360 and PS3, it’s not the big leap in technology that one would assume a next generation console would be like,
Despite having last generation hardware, the GPU is said to a slightly stronger than the ones used on the PS3 and Xbox 360 so it’s not all bad news after all. Game developer Crytek has stated that its CryEngine can easily run on the Wii U. The first Crysis game was never released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as they were not powerful enough to run the game. This suggests that the Wii U will be more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Nintendo itself has yet to announce official hardware specifications of the Wii U. Either way; the gameplay tech demo shown at E3 was enough to convince me that the Wii U has excellent HD graphics!

June 15, 2011 at 6:10 PMCurrent Gen systems? The PS3 and 360 architecture was last-gen less than half a year after the 360 launched (8800 DX10 GPU’s were launched shortly after the 360). As far as I’m aware, the Wii U’s GPU is actually ‘last gen’, according to current hardware available.
Don’t play consoles for super horsepower though, that’s what my PC is for, mainly just 1st party exclusive titles.
