For those of you who have Played Battlefield Bad Company 2, you may have become accustomed to the ability to spawn on any of your squadmates upon your untimely demise. Well Battlefield 3 is tweaking that mechanic in order to prevent spawn camping objectives and opposing bases. The new mechanic was described by senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz who reported it as a response on Twitter. The tweet said:
Squad Leaders can span on any squadmate, squad members can only spawn on the Leader.Keeps pace up without tons o spawns.
I like this concept of spawning more that the current one for multiple reasons. The first reason is that it makes more sense to only be able to spawn on the person with authority rather than everyone running wild as soon as your feet touch the dirt on a squadmate. It also gives you a reason to work as a team in order to keep the squad leader safe for a spawn point closer to your enemies objective. The second reason is that this can reduce the amount of spawn camping that is seen on the battlefield. What do you guys think? Is this a change for the better or does it make things worse? Feel free to comment below.

June 26, 2011 at 2:45 AMI think the spawning idea is terrible.
Unless, you can override who has the spawning authority. Who wants to continually spawn on the sniper who’s shooting from the spawn, rather than spawning on someone advancing on the enemy base?

June 26, 2011 at 7:25 AMWtf, now people will be spawining next to some idiotic camper who is not even out in the field. Clap Clap Clap

June 26, 2011 at 7:38 AMI think this sounds like a good idea. It limits the amount of spawning and adds a new tactical element of protecting the squad leader. Also, I’m guessing like previous BFs you can create a squad with your friends so you can choose who is the leader so you’re not stuck “spawning on the sniper”!

June 26, 2011 at 7:52 AM@Anon Agreed. Unless they implement some sort of system that doesn’t let that kind of player be squad leader then I think that spawn system could fall on it’s arse.

June 26, 2011 at 10:01 AMI agree. but since there will be many squads to choose from might as well let campers be in squads by them selves. I STILL THINK SNIPERS RUIN BATTLEFIELD…. I play on server with sniper cap and its the greatest thing since BFBC2 released. Sucks Xbox and Ps3 users never get to experience how its is without the whole team sniping/camping… People just dont understand that there is actually NO SNIPER CLASS…. ITS RECON and that means they also spot and move…. for console 24 players and 16 are snipers… The games suck. For pc its gonna be 64 players from which 50 snipers and game will suck again. DICE SHOULD AUTO CAP 4 snipers per team. IN bc2. In bf3 8 per 32 player team… Dont have to agree, its just my 2 cents.

June 26, 2011 at 10:17 AMSnipers should join sniper teams. Keep that garbage from happening. I hate having to run cross two cities cause of the f’n camping snipers.

June 26, 2011 at 10:46 AMThis is more in line with the real Battlefield games, BF2 and 2142 where players could only spawn on squad leader or beacon. The ability for squad leader to spawn on squad members is a handy touch though.

June 26, 2011 at 10:54 AMI agree with the guy above and I think that they should let you choose your squad before you even start the game. Like if you wanna snipe you can pick that squad. I’m and xbox 360 gamer and I hate having one teamate staying in the spawn and camping the UAV system. Thats why I have started to use C4 and blow them up so that people would leave.

June 26, 2011 at 11:30 AMI like the new idea, Spawn camping was horrible and completley unfair. And why do people hate the recon class? If you have a long-range sniper rifle, you don’t go into the battle, you pick off enemies in a dark cover, I’ve saved plenty of my fellow teamate’s asses from being knifed and shot. Snipers are a great, actually, essential part of the game I think. I do like the spawn idea a lot though.

June 26, 2011 at 3:17 PMI played on a server recently with a Recon cap and it was horrible. The 4 dudes who were playing Recon were NOT throwing the motion balls while we were attacking the MComs. So I tried to spawn as a Recon (with shotgun) in order to move with my team and throw the motion balls, but I couldn’t because of the stupid server rule.

June 26, 2011 at 3:49 PMIf you don’t want a sniper as the squad leader don’t join their squad. Simples. Besides the squad leader should be on the front line giving orders and supporting his men, the sniper is for a squad member who should be spotting and sniping targets that prove problems for the squad. Honestly I thought Battlefield players would have more sense than this.

June 26, 2011 at 5:26 PMStupid move.
Anon already named my first thought, but not just with snipers. I’ve been in squads where some members just suck. The whole reason the ‘select a teammate to spawn on’ works as it lets you spawn somewhere more sane.
I get and love the whole teamwork thing in battlefield, but i wish they wouldnt try so hard to force it on us. I more often than not play solo and i am not looking forward to begging the rest of my team to play together just so i dont have to spend all day running from the base.
besides, it’s a tad unfair that the squad leader may feel the need to play it safe to avoid hampering their team. I know i likely will =/

June 27, 2011 at 10:29 AM@Those who don’t know what a Sniper is. Snipers are not ‘campers’. They are meant to engage targets from afar, it’s their role. Unless you would prefer them to do the noscoping-quickscoping-trickshoting bullshit from CoD?
This isn’t CoD, this is Battlefield, which demands actual strategy and tactics. It requires multiple roles, one of which is the sniper. You don’t like sniping? Then don’t snipe. You don’t like others sniping? Then join a server with a sniper cap. If you can’t deal with there being snipers, maybe you’re just no good at the game.
In case you’ve never been a sniper in Battlefield before, just so you know, it’s pretty hard. Harder than CoD anyway. You have to judge the distance from your target to estimate the amount of bullet drop (although someone told me that there’s no bullet drop on consoles, I wouldn’t know), as well as keeping an eye out for any threats such as other snipers, or other enemies that might get in close. It’s harder than any other class in my opinion.
I don’t know how easy it is to snipe on consoles with no bullet drop (so I heard!), in addition to fewer players on the battlefield (fewer threats), but on PC it is hard, but feels very rewarding when you get some nice kills.
Just backing up snipers, since there seems to be alot of hate for them here. Maybe they are generally hated on consoles, like I said I wouldn’t know. I play on PC.
On topic of the article, I prefer this spawning mechanic to the previous in BFBC2. It is quite annoying when one person gets into your base, then the rest of their squad all spawn on them. Hopefully this will balance things a little more.
(And a note to the comment about a sniper squad-leader; you don’t have to spawn on your squad-leader! And if you’re with friends your sniper wouldn’t be the leader anyway, unless you’re all idiots.)

August 4, 2011 at 10:53 AM“Squad Leaders can span on any squadmate, squad members can only spawn on the Leader.Keeps pace up without tons o spawns.”
This won’t change anything.
The SL will spawn in on any camping SM and the rest will spawn in on the SL. Just a few seconds extra wait for the same thing, really.
No actual teamplay needed.
And for you guys complaining about running those few extra meters to the action, try playing the Battlefield 2 mod Project Reality and you’ll never feel that way about a Battlefield game, to date, again!
