Players who are part of the Xbox LIVE Preview Program and received the Xbox Live Dashboard update today it carries a new feature that will disappoint the pirates.
As the new format disc is coming on the Xbox 360, a new Anti-Piracy check has been implemented that prohibit the pirates from playing a backed up copy of the game. In addition to the new anti-piracy check, the DVD firmware on every drive of the Xbox 360 will be rewritten. The purpose of the new firmware that will be installed on the DVD drive will allow the system to unlock the extra 1GB of data on a DVD dual layered games. With that being said, players who installed a modified firmware that allows them to play a back up disc will no longer work.
With the ongoing battle of Microsoft against the pirates, the new dashboard update that eventually everyone will get will have this new security firmware. The question is, how long until hackers can crack this new DVD firmware?

April 8, 2011 at 9:39 AMInteresting article there but that bit puzzled me : ”the DVD firmware on every drive of the Xbox 360 will be rewritten.”
I’ve read everything I could find on that update, and so far I understood that the AP2.5 is indeed being implemented on every game, and patch the isos will be required but I’ve read nothing about the firmware of drives being rewritten by this update.
I did not even know it could be rewritten via a kernel update.

April 8, 2011 at 12:40 PMYea this has already been talked about, if you have a hitachi drive you are fine as they cant upgrade that drive, umm I also believe the samsung is fine. but the benq and light-on drives will need to be patched to play the games again. Also dont quote me on this but I believe that is the right order of the drives.

April 8, 2011 at 5:35 PMSince it’s taken THIS long for MS to come up with said technology. It’s safe to assume that this time around it’s going to take ALOT longer for the hacking teams to even attempt to crack this.
The only thing i’m thinking (from what i’ve read so far). Is that the copy protection footprint on the disc will be shrinking, which could lead them to finding ways of cracking it from the disc side of things.
All in all. It’s nice to see both Sony and MS stepping up the ‘anti piracy’ game. Being one who floats on both sides of things, this intrigues me!

April 9, 2011 at 1:51 PMThe real question isn’t how long it’s going to take to crack for the hackers, but rather, how long until we see a legitimate customer whose game won’t work because of this new feature.
It’s one thing to prevent piracy, it’s completely different thing to inconvenience your own paying customers. This is why I prefer the route of rewarding the customer, rather than striking at the pirates… because some loyal customers always get caught in the crossfire

April 11, 2011 at 6:34 AMIt seems like they have finally done something about it. But like all the other times, it will get hacked. Seriously everytime they do this they don’t realise that there are expert hackers out there that will eventually hack the system. All I can say is tsk tsk tsk. And I agree with Taerdin we who don’t hack should get rewards instead of having to pay the price all the time.
