In what has to be the biggest gaffe Sony has ever made, Sony’s very own fictional VP, Kevin Butler, has retweeted the PS3’s root key to over 70,000 followers.
A user sent a message to Kevin Butler’s account which contained the key and a short message saying, “Come at me”. Butler thinking this was related to Battleships, the board game, then retweeted with, “Lemme guess… you sank my Battleship?”
The post has now been removed and it is hard to tell what the repercussions of this will be, if any at all. I think it’s safe to say this was an accident and that Kevin Butler isn’t supporting Geohot in his ongoing legal battle with Sony.
The root key is essentially a code that can be used to remove all of the PS3s security opening it up to homebrew and piracy. Sony have been trying incredibly hard to remove it from the internet and this is the last thing they would have wanted to happen.
For legal reasons we unfortunately can’t show you the screenshot itself but feel free to Google for it.
