A few days ago at the 27th Chaos Communication Congress team fail0verflow had some news. They claimed to have defeated a large part of Sony’s security… They went on to explain how they obtained “Private Keys” which could ultimately lead to a non dongle jailbreak, and much much much more. They went on to say they will release the tools around January… but nothing more defined was said. Without a doubt if these tools are released to the scene the risk of hacking will drop, and hacking the ps3 will become more of a breeze.
So how do you feel about this? Please remember that not every hacker is evil, so please keep it clean.

January 2, 2011 at 9:19 PMSigh…. This means a really big update for the PS3 system that COULD fuck up stuff for the normal users…
Why can’t people just buy the games in the store and stop trying to “break” the consoles just so they can play pirated games?
They only ruin gaming for the ones that want to play games fair and square and for what? Just so they could prove that they COULD break the security codes?

Daniel, you are wrong for numerous reasons.
Firstly, this is an “un-patchable” security breach. In order to patch this, Sony would have to break all compatibility with any PS3 software for <= version 3.55. HOMEBREW CODE IS DIGITALLY SIGNED, AND APPEARS IDENTICAL TO OFFICIAL SONY CODE WHEN ENCRYPTED USING THESE KEYS.
Secondly, this is not done to facilitate piracy, but to promote OpenSource and to give the end consumer full control over what is essentially a piece of hardware like a machine, not a device to control my spending. It is also done to highlight the flaws of their current system…
