According to newly found information from SKFU Sony plans to implement serial keys on Blu-Ray discs on the PS3. Similar to the serial keys already found on PC games this would lock each disc to a maximum of five uses.
Each disc will also be locked to a specific serial key, meaning that both parts are required to play the game on your PS3. When you enter your serial key and corresponding disc it will send a signal to Sony telling them that your game is legitimate.
Draconian DRM such as key locks has been heavily scrutinized in computer gaming and its likely that going to a 5 use lock on all PS3 will increase piracy.
Choosing to follow through with these plans will then give more incentive for people to pirate games as the paying customers are treated like criminals, not even having control over their own software.

January 20, 2011 at 8:30 PMHow is piracy going to increase any more? It’s already pretty rampant now that backupmanagers are working in 3.55.
Sony is forced to do something like this because the PS3 is blown wide open. If anything, blame the hackers/pirates. I blame them for taking away OtherOS, not Sony. If geofag would just keep the exploit to himself, Sony would not have removed it. If the CFWs and master keys were not released, Sony wouldn’t have had to do this.

WHAT???!?????!!
Did u even reread that? If you buy your game then u have absolutely no problems. How many times have you put your disc in 3 different ps3s let alone going the distance for FIVE! What about PSN downloads??????? It’s the same rules there and i’ve NEVER heard about a problem with it except from people who game share!!

Its sorta the same logic that people used for Other OS removal = Ok to hack. Its a very A = B Situation here, I have suspected Sony wanted to kill other OS due to the Slims being less than a Phat in a few ways, and this would be 1 less thing. However I don’t think Sony would ever up and remove it, I would say Geohot pushed them to do it. Yet many people see this as a problem, and decided Sony should pay for fixing a problem? To quote the latest Epic 4g ad “It makes a lot of sense if you don’t think about it.”

January 20, 2011 at 9:58 PMI guess I just have to wait 5-6 months for games to go down in price, sense I’m not buying every new game on the selves, because games are madly expensive these days. This just seems like win and loss situation for Sony.
