From early Microsoft Kinect reviews it seems that the product has a few facial recognition problems. Some darker skinned users apparently are unable to use the facial recognition feature while white colleagues had no such problem.
While not being able to use this feature won’t stop darker skinned users playing Kinect games it does however mean they won’t be able to use it to log in via Kinect and may possibly be unable to use some titles attributes, that use the facial recognition to work.
Despite the fact that currently it is unknown whether it is just a bug or if some foul testing is to blame I find it incomprehensible that Microsoft, the large company it is, would of let its prize new technology go out untested in this way. Whilst to date there seems no other explanations, apart from a bug, the fact it works perfectly for white skinned players leads me to thinking that a lack of testing must be to blame.
With Microsoft hoping to sell 5 million units of Kinect this holiday season they need to act quick and fast to solve this problem as otherwise sales will undoubtedly suffer.
