Publisher Square Enix announced today that it has contracted Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights 2, KOTOR 2, Alpha Protocol) to carry on Gas Powered Games’ well-received Dungeon Siege franchise. Obsidian CEO and Co-Founder Feargus Urquhart stated “it’s a distinct privilege and thrill to become a part of the Dungeon Siege legacy. This partnership…is a milestone for both Obsidian and the franchise, and the two companies’ strengths for compelling characters and storytelling will shine throughout Dungeon Siege 3.” The game will mix action gameplay and a “robust RPG system featuring a large selection of abilities, an extensive multiplayer component and the depth of story Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment are known for creating.”
The first entry in the series was released in 2002 for the PC and was an action-focused role-playing game in the vein of Diablo; it’s sequel arrived in 2005 and was also met with good reviews. Dungeon Siege III will be the first title to find its way to consoles, however, although there is little indication thus far as to the mechanics of play. Obsidian is best known for developing RPG sequels in large franchises, having handled Knights of the Old Republic 2 and the soon-to-be-released Fallout: New Vegas. Dungeon Siege III has been announced for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, and no date has been set.
