When it comes to handheld gaming devices, Nintendo is always in the lead. This statement holds true as the Nintendo DS has now sold 30 million units in Japan.
The Nintendo DS launched in Japan exactly five years and five months ago on May 9th 2004. The data for the 30 million units includes all the iterations from the Nintendo DS released to date. The original Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi and the newest acquisition the Nintendo DSi XL.
Nintendo will continue its dominance in the handheld market with the release of the Nintendo 3DS which promises to have 3D capabilities.
The entire Nintendo DS line has so far sold close to 130 million units worldwide.
