A lot of new information regarding the Modern Warfare series has emerged recently. Some of it has been in the form of solid evidence or statements while others remain rumors that are quickly building speed. Here’s what’s going on.
Hidden Multiplayer Mode Unlocked
There has been talk about some secret multiplayer modes for Modern Warfare 2 dating back to its release in November. That information was overlooked by most since it seemed to apply only to the PC version. That has changed. Recently, some Xbox 360 players found out how to unlock and play one of these secret modes. The match type they played is called Global Thermonuclear War. It is pretty much capture the flag….but with a nuke. In one of the gameplay sessions the players provided they are battling it out on Highrise for control of the nuke that is placed in the middle of the map. The time it takes to capture is much longer than other game modes, but it still seems quite entertaining and fast paced. Check out the video here.
Infinity Ward and Modern Warfare 3
Infinity Ward signed over its top developers in a long term contract with Activision back in 2002. Among the items listed in the contract was a statement allowing the Santa Monica studio to pursue a “unique new IP.” It has been eight years since this contract and the Call of Duty series has raked in over $3 billion with Modern Warfare 2 achieving $310 million within its initial 24 hours of release. It seems that Infinity Ward may be getting ready to move on. According to a VG247 source they are working on something new. Also provided from their source are the names of two suspected developers: a Canadian studio (possibly Radical Entertainment) and Sledgehammer Games. If Infinity Ward really has moved on to create something new, then out of the two given options it would seem Sledgehammer Games, headed by Glenn Schofield and Michael Condrey who were main Dead Space developers, is the one to go with. The reason for choosing them is because they had publicly announced that they are working on a “new game based on one of Activision’s existing franchises.” Not only that but they are currently searching for a multiplayer designer with “five years experience working on current AAA multiplayer shooters for current consoles and PC.”
Call of Duty MMO?
Destructiod’s sources have informed them that Infinity Ward’s new project will be an MMO. So far they have learned that Infinity Ward is recruiting talent from Sony Online Entertainment and maybe even Blizzard. This does not mean that the Call of Duty series will be left out to dry. It will continue to be released each year while this new project runs alongside it. This could very well be the “unique new IP” that is rumored to be stealing Infinity Ward away from the Modern Warfare 3 development. At this time it is unknown whether the MMO will be sport the Call of Duty title or if it is a new franchise all together. The idea of a Call of Duty MMO is far from foreign and would not be surprising at all. Whatever they are putting together I am sure they will continue to set the standard for online gaming.
