The announcement of Valkyria Chronicles II as a PSP exclusive was received with mostly mixed emotions. Some were just happy to see the series continue, others were upset that it would be leaving it’s home console for a hand-held, and some OTHERS were upset that it wouldn’t be jumping to the Xbox 360. Sega however has good faith that this decision is the correct one, and while some may not appreciate it, many are excited to get not only a second game, but a portable one at that.
However, Sega is not ruling out the chance of the series making a return to a console, namely the PS3. Aaron Webber, the Assistant Community Manager for Sega of America, responded to a comment on the Europe Playstation Blog. “So far it seems like most of the fans are really just happy to see the series continue – and, if VCII sells well, it means a much greater chance that the series can pick up again back on a larger console, like the PS3.”
There you have it, all you have to do is support the game and the series will continue. It’s a strange new concept called “success.” Valkyria Chronicles II is set to release sometime in 2010 for the PSP in Europe and North America.
Chance
September 21, 2009 at 8:44 PMI’ve lost the link to the original interview, but shortly after Valkyria Chronicles II was announced, a senior staff member was asked if this meant that Valkyria Chronicles’ development would focus on handhelds in the future. His one-word response? “No.”
They’ve also flat-out said that the purpose of placing Valkyria Chronicles II on the PSP is to reach a wider audience – and once you’re a fan of Valkyria Chronicles, you’re a fanatic. So they get more fans by addressing the fifty million PSPs out there, and – if the fans of the PS3 game are any indication – those consumers will follow the series back to the PS3 for the next iteration. It’s good business, in theory.
I sure hope it works out.
