Gamestop employees have been hinting to us that the PS3 Slim and that backwards compatibility will indeed be coming through a download. This is of course not an official confirmation, as Sony has yet to make a statement on backwards compatibility.
For now, we can only speculate on this as we only have the word of a few anonymous tipsters to go on. We will of course bring you the word as soon as we get some official news, but for now you can file this one in the hopeful rumor category.
If the XBOX 360 can do it, why can’t the PS3? If this is indeed true, then it will be a software based emulator similar to what the XBOX 360 does.
Sony patented technology that will emulate the PS2’s emotion engine back in 2007, so anything is possible at this point. All we can do now is wait and hope.

August 19, 2009 at 6:03 PMWho said PS3 can’t do it? If you remember, original PS3s had BC.. It’s just the mater of is worth the money it would cost them to incorporate it. Apparently, it wasn’t.

August 19, 2009 at 6:58 PMAll PS3’s right now is capable of running PS2 games. Back when 60gb PS3 launched in Europe the PS3 CELL (CPU) had to emulate the PS2’s Emotion Engine (CPU) through software. But it is just needs to emulate the PS2’s Graphics Sychronizer (GPU) to the PS3’s RSX (GPU) through software. I predict that Sony is working on a PS2 emulation, but its the matter of time before they release a firmware update and start adding PS2 games to the PlayStation Store. Don’t get your hopes up though.

August 19, 2009 at 7:01 PMI can’t find the quote, but when they dropped BC a Sony exec said it was straight-up because they wanted people to buy more PS3 games, instead of PS2 titles.
With the unveiling of the Slim at Gamescom, the question of BC came up again, and the Sony rep quoted some God-knows-where-they-got-this-information statistics that said people had no interest in BC on their PS3.
I don’t much trust information posted online that came from Some Dude Who Says He Works At GameStop who swears his store’s Sony rep told him BC is coming back – but…
http://thegamesofchance.blogspot.com/2009/08/another-ps2-emulation-patent-from-sony.html
…Sony has patented tech that will allow the PS3, though software, to emulate both of the PS2’s processors. Until they release it (IF they release it), they’ll just keep telling us we don’t actually want BC – when they’re not being more honest, and telling us they don’t want us to have it.

August 20, 2009 at 2:06 AMfor gods sake stop moaning about BC. If you want to play ps2 games use the ps2. i can understand that there will be some people who have a broken ps2 and want to use their old games on their new ps3 but as an owner of a lauch ps3 i can count on one hand the amount of times i have loaded up ps2 software ( and also 0 times in last 4 months). If you wanted BC then you should have paid the money for the original ps3 when it had it, stop moaning to everybody about it not having it in the now much cheaper ps3 when you wasnt willing to support the system when it had it.

that must be one of the dumbest statements I’ve read in a long time. You’re talking about two completely different technologies behind the consoles.

October 19, 2009 at 7:10 PMI agree. They should stop complaining about the BC of PS3. People don’t have money from their mommy and daddy when the system first come out and it is their fault. They should not wait for the price to drop or work hard to earn money for the game system.
